COVID-19 Update - Friday 10 July 2020

THE SCHOOL is OPEN for YEAR 10 Lessons ONLY

The school continues to provide a childcare service to those parents and carers who are key worker and those students who are most vulnerable students.

Our fifteenth week of school closure draws to an end. This would have been the week 6 of our final half term leading up to the Summer break. Next week will be our last week of the Summer term and the school will close on Friday 17th July at 3pm for the traditional summer holiday. As such this will be the last week that staff will be setting home-schooling tasks.

“Keep your thoughts positive because your thoughts become your words, your words become your actions. Keep your values positive because your values become your destiny”

Ghandi

This is not quite an exact quote from Ghandi. I have taken the liberty of adding the fact that in my experience your words often translate into your actions – the way you think about things influences the way you do things. As a parent I was reminded again this week how my children pick up on the words and actions that I display; I was reminded that my values are not only my destiny but that they also become part of my children’s destiny. Quite a sobering thought……

One of my greatest joys this week has been to see the massive engagement with the Inter-Chapter Virtual Sports Week across all year groups. It has revealed a real competitive streak in all of our Chapter leaders as well as amongst the student body who are taking real pride in representing their Chapters. Another great joy for me is of course the now famous ‘GALLERY’ – this week is a best ever week with 60+ slides of fantastic pupil work.

Our plans for the full reopening of the school in September are well underway and we will notify parents/ carers in my final news round up next week what those plans are.

We are here to help and support

If you are struggling financially in any way please do contact the school in confidence. There are many things we can do to signpost you to support.

Safeguarding

If you are worried about any member of our school community, please either visit https://swgfl.org.uk/whisper/twf1 or send a text message (anonymously) to 07860 021 323 starting your message with TWF1. This facility can be used by students, parents, carers and other family members.

If you are worried that someone is in immediate risk of significant harm, please do not use this reporting facility, but dial 999 immediately.

A Uniform Appeal - reminder

If your child has grown out of their uniform, including pairs of shoes where there is still a good deal of life left in them, we would really appreciate your donations. If you could wash the items you wish to donate (not the shoes of course!), put them into a bag and drop them off outside reception when you are next on one of your socially distanced walks we would be most grateful.

Year 11

An appeal and reminder from last week that if your year 11 child has any school text books/ resources can we ask that they drop them off at reception over the coming week.

GCSE Results will be available from 10am on Thursday 20th August. We will notify you next week how we will distribute results – whether this is coming into to school to collect them or emailing them out.

We are still not in a position to facilitate a school ‘Prom’ or other similar leavers’ event. We a still committed to trying to do something at some point in the next academic year.

Year 10 - ETON COLLEGE – Online courses

I have today emailed all year 10 students with the opportunity to access one  FREE online ETON COLLEGE course. Places are limited and so it is on a first come first served basis. The two courses on offer are:

     Reslience–self study     Making an Impact

Click here to see an overview of the two courses.

This coming week in school:

Don’t forget:

  • chapter TEAMS meetings for years 7 8 and 9 are weekly recurring events.
  • Year 10 lessons are taking place

Accessing student work online Years 9 and 10

Year 9 and 10 pupils should be logging into their school email to check out direct communications from their class teachers. We now send a weekly reminder text to all year 9 and 10 parents to remind you that your child should be logging into their school email account each Monday morning. We are now emailing work to both students and parents/ carers to help you know what work is being set and enable you to support your child in managing their time to complete the work.

Pupils in years 9 and 10 should be logging into their school email accounts on a daily basis in order to access the work teachers are setting for the week ahead. All work is set by the Monday morning of each week and follows a standardised format. In particular, to support parents, we have included success criteria for what a good piece of work looks like as well as supportive guidance notes, which will often include links to useful tutorial videos.

Please encourage your child to pose questions to their class teacher if they need help completing a task and encourage them to submit completed work back to their class teacher.

When your child sends a piece of work back to their teacher for feedback the teacher will, in the first instance, do one of two things:

A) They will click the ‘like’ button to indicate that the work has been received and that it is of good quality i.e. that it has responded to the success criteria set for the task.

OR

B) They will email your child back to indicate that the work has not met the success criteria and brief guidance on what your child needs to do to improve it.

Teachers will continue to follow up this initial step with either further individual feedback or group feedback.

Class teachers are constantly on the lookout for outstanding pieces of work from students that they can include the in THE GALLERY showcase.

Class teachers are awarding 50 Trackit points for work submitted by pupils that responds to the success criteria indicated for each task. Where they feel a piece of work is of notable quality they are awarding a further 100 points for including it in the weekly GALLERY.

Accessing student work online Years 7 and 8

Year 7 and 8 pupils should be using the school website to access their school work for the coming week. We now send a weekly reminder text to all year 7 and 8 parents/ carers to let you know that the work for the coming week is loaded onto the school website.

Pupils in years 7 and 8 should be accessing the school website under the STUDENT tab in order to collect the work set by subject teachers for the week ahead. In a similar fashion to year 9 and 10 all work set by subject teachers follows the same standardised format with the same level of supportive guidance. Work set for year 7 and 8 pupils is closely linked to the subject curricula so it is really important that your child is completing the work set to the best of their ability – taking particular note of the success criteria. Please encourage your child to pose questions to their class teacher if they need help completing a task and encourage them to submit completed work back to their class teacher.

Head of School Weekly Challenges to challenges@thekings.staffs.sch.uk

We are still working on the entries for the Parables Challenge. I know that students who have entered are in close contact with the art teachers and responding to feedback in order to make their entry the very best that it can be. I have included the very latest versions of the entries in this week’s GALLERY and I hope you will agree that the improvements are awesome.

I will announce the final 4 winning entries next week and I think that will be a fitting way to conclude the whole Challenge.

I song I LOVE to sing on karaoke is ………..
